Pharynx
The pharynx is the main part of the throat. It has three parts: the nasopharynx, the oropharynx, and the laryngopharynx.
Nasopharynx
The nasopharynx is the top part of the throat. It is the space above the soft palate that allows us to breathe through our noses. The soft palate separates the oropharynx and the nasopharynx.

Oropharynx
The oropharynx is the part of the pharynx that connects to the mouth. It extends from the uvula to the epiglottis. The epiglottis is a flap-like piece of cartilage that prevents food from going in the lungs when swallowing. The oropharynx allows both food and air to pass through with the help of the epiglottis.

Laryngopharynx
The laryngopharynx is a common passage for both food and air. It is continuous with the esophagus. The laryngopharynx is located below the epiglottis.
